MINNEAPOLIS |
(Reuters) - The evacuation of more than a quarter of Minot, North Dakota's fourth largest city, is expected to begin shortly with warning sirens due to sound because of imminent overtopping of some levees, a city spokesman said on Wednesday morning."It's imminent. We are not exactly sure," said Dean Lenertz. "We are trying to patch up as many holes as we can to give people as much time as we possibly can to get them out safely."
The sirens will be sounded throughout the whole city, but there are certain areas where the water will go first, Lenertz said.
Minot officials had ordered a mandatory evacuation of flood-threatened areas of the city of nearly 41,000 by 6 p.m. on Wednesday because Souris River flooding was expected to run well beyond even recently fortified flood defenses.
