From Infertility and Erectile Dysfunction to Size Matters and Male Menopause, World-Renowned Urological Surgeon Dr. Paul Perito Uncovers the Hard Truths About Men’s Health
(Vydox.com) - New York, NY (August 20, 2012) – As young boys grow into adolescence, they experience a flood of information about human sexuality. Most of this information comes from friends, entertainment or the Internet. This lack of accurate information, gives dependence on hearsay and non-medical information for sex education. This in turn, gives rise to myths and misconceptions about human sexuality, misconceptions that all too often continue into adulthood.

“There is a lot of misinformation about sexual health,” says Dr. Paul Perito, Board-certified Urologist and Founder of Perito Urology, one of the top centers in the world for the treatment of erectile dysfunction based in Coral Gables, FL. “Discussions regarding sex education usually revolve around educating teenagers. But increasingly, adults are in need of sex education, too. Myths about sex are rife in our society. They occur because people pass off partial information as fact. Or, just as often, they have no information and invent sexual facts.”

Below, Dr. Perito addresses some of the common myths and questions regarding male sexual health.

Men Don’t Have Fertility Cycles.

According to Dr. Perito, generally speaking, the time of year and time of day can affect a man’s sperm count. “Sperm counts are higher in the winter and lower in the summer, possibly because sperm production is increased in cooler temperatures,” says Dr. Perito. “Sperm counts for men are also highest in the morning, mirroring the time when male hormone levels are also at a daily high.” Despite these observations, experts do not really agree whether the time of day or year have an effect on fertility rates when looking at the big picture.

As most women know, prepping their body for pregnancy is a process that takes a lot of time and planning. But what should men do when they are the other piece to the conception puzzle? Many men may not be aware that it takes three full months for sperm to be created. That means that the sperm a man is ejaculating today was part of a cycle that began three months ago, thus, his sperm count will be affected by anything he has done in the last three months. Smoking, heaving drinking, poor eating habits – all of those can reduce a man’s sperm count.

Erectile Dysfunction Should Be Accepted As A Natural Part Of The Aging Process.

While ED is more common in older men, it is not a normal part of the aging process and should be viewed as a medical problem that requires a medical solution. “Just as you would not leave high blood pressure untreated as you age, ED and its effects on the body should not be ignored,” warns Dr. Perito.

Men Should Not Worry About Erectile Dysfunction If They Are Under 40 Years Old.

While ED is more common in older men, it can affect men of all ages. According to Dr. Perito, “This is becoming increasingly true as younger men are developing medical conditions that can contribute to ED such as diabetes, high-blood pressure, and heart conditions.”

The Penis Is A Muscle.

This myth gets peddled by charlatans trying to sell products for “strengthening” and lengthening the penis. But in fact, the penis isn’t a muscle. “It’s a collection of spongy tissues that rely entirely on engorgement with blood to become erect,” says Dr. Perito. “The most important muscle in terms of getting and sustaining an erection is the heart.”

Some experts believe you can strengthen erections by building your kegel muscles (men and women have them). This involves repetitive squeezing, as if you’re holding back and then releasing urine. For men, strong kegels may help with premature ejaculation—and they may intensify orgasm.

The Average Penis Is Seven Inches Long.

The average American penis size is a little over five inches long when fully erect. Penile implants are somewhat of a hot topic on the Internet—forums are abuzz with word that the surgery can enhance the cosmetic appeal and size of a man’s penis. Unfortunately, most of the information available about penile implants is shoddy at best, with claims that the implants can increase penis size and girth. Penile implants are actually a medical solution. And although most men with implants report sexual performance benefits, an implant won’t make the overall size of a man’s penis bigger. In fact, once a man is rendered impotent he begins losing penile size corroborating the saying, “if you do not use it, you lose it.”

Men Reach Their Sexual Peak at 18, And Women Reach Theirs At 28.

Testosterone peaks at age 18 in men; women's estrogen hits its high point in their mid-20s. But peak hormones don't mean peak sexual performance.

There Are Certain Foods That Increase Libido.

There is no such thing as a food aphrodisiac. According to Dr. Perito, within Western medical science, no substantiated claims exist supporting the idea that certain foods increase libido, or sexual desire. For example, oysters do not increase a man’s sex drive. The common argument supporting oysters as an aphrodisiac surrounds their high zinc content, since zinc plays a role in the production of the sex hormone testosterone. The mistake here is that zinc is not some kind of natural Viagra. Zinc only enters the picture when there’s a deficiency of the mineral in our bodies; when there’s a zinc deficiency, testosterone levels decrease.

Men Experience Menopause (aka Andropause).

In medical terms, it’s called late-onset hypogonadism - the gradual decline of the male hormone testosterone beginning in middle age, right around the time men also start gaining weight, losing muscle mass, feeling depressed and suffering from sleep problems, weakness and, most notably, sexual dysfunction. Over studies have confirmed the benefits of monitored testosterone replacement therapies. Therapies have evolved into simple and easy to follow regimens most men find extremely beneficial.

What is erectile dysfunction, and how can penile implant surgery correct the condition?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition where a man fails to achieve or maintain a consistent erection that is suitable for penetrative sexual intercourse. Once a patient has expended all other resources for treatment of ED – medications, lifestyle change, etc. – a penile implant may be his final, best option for resuming a satisfactory sex life. Penile implants allow a man to achieve an erection, thus offering him the opportunity to experience a normal sex life.

What types of penile implants are available?

At Perito Urology, two types of penile implants are offered: inflatable and malleable.

The Coloplast Titan OTR is a three-piece inflatable device that utilizes a reservoir and pump system. This allows the patient to control the size of his erection and return the penis to a natural looking, flaccid state when he is not actively using the penile implant.

The Coloplast Genesis consists of two flexible (malleable) rods. The penis is always ready and simply needs to be positioned into place for intercourse.

How effective are the penile implants?

Historically, the success rate is 95-98%, with full restoration of sexual function. The implant does not interfere with urination or ejaculation. Each penile implant device is covered with a lifetime warranty.

Will the implant affect penis size?

Neither of the penile implant options utilized by Dr. Perito is intended to increase the length or girth of the penis.

What are the benefits of the minimally invasive penile implant surgery offered by Dr. Perito?

There is less cutting involved, which equates to a shorter surgical time – Dr. Perito completes his penile implant surgeries within 15 minutes – which means a faster recovery – most patients can resume normal sexual activity within 4 to 6 weeks. Additionally, the procedure can be performed under local anesthesia. This eliminates potential complications that may arise with general anesthesia.
