You can break your penis

If the penis is violently twisted when erect, it can break. There are no bones in the penis, but the tubes that fill with blood during an erection can burst. Blood pours out of them inside the penis and causes a very painful swelling. Reported cases of penile fracture are rare, but it's thought that some men are too embarrassed to report it to their doctor. Damage during sex, where a partner is on top, is responsible for about one-third of all cases. The breakage usually occurs when a man's penis slips out of his partner and is violently bent.

Men have several night-time erections

On average, a healthy man has three to five erections during a full night's sleep, with each erection lasting 25-35 minutes. It's common for men to wake up with an erection, informally called a "morning glory". This is in fact the last in the series of night-time erections. The cause of night-time erections isn't fully understood. However, studies suggest they are closely associated with the phase of sleep known as REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. This is when dreaming is most common. Whatever their cause, most doctors agree that night-time erections are a sign that everything is in working order.

Penis length is not linked to foot size

The idea that the size of your penis is in proportion to your shoe size is a myth, according to a study published in the British Journal of Urology International. Researchers at University College London measured the penises of 104 men, including teenagers and pensioners. The average penis length in this group was 13cm (5.1 inches) when soft and gently stretched, and the average British shoe size was nine (43 European size). However, researchers found no link between shoe size and penis length.

Small penises make big erections

Shorter penises increase more in length than longer ones when they become erect. Research based on the penis measurements of 2,770 men found that shorter penises increased by 86% when erect, nearly twice that of longer penises (47%). In the 1988 study published in the Journal of Sex Research, researchers also found that the difference in length between a short penis and a longer one was a lot less obvious when erect than when flaccid. For example, the flaccid penises varied in length by 3.1cm (1.2 inches), whereas the average erect lengths differed by only 1.7cm (0.67 inches).

The penis is not a muscle

Contrary to popular belief, the so-called love muscle doesn't contain any muscles. That's why you can't move it very much when it's erect. The penis is a kind of sponge that fills with blood when a man is sexually excited. Blood builds up inside two cylinder-shaped chambers, causing the penis to swell and stiffen. The swelling blocks off the veins that normally take blood away from the penis. As an erection disappears, the arteries in the two chambers narrow again, allowing blood to drain away from the penis.

Measuring your penis

Most men's view about their penis is formed during childhood. Growing up, they may see the penis of an older brother, friend or their father and mentally compare this to their own.

Fears and anxiety about penis size may also arise after taunts from other people during adolescence or following remarks from a sexual partner.

However, very often men have the wrong perspective on their penis, says sexual health expert Dr David Delvin. "When you look down at your own organ, it seems shorter than it really is," he says. "In contrast, when you glance around at other guys in changing rooms or showers, you get a sideways view of them. So they usually seem to be longer than you are."

To see your penis as other people would, look at yourself undressed in front of a full-length mirror. The penis looks longer and larger than when observed from above.

At some stage, most boys get out a ruler or a tape measure to find out how long their penis is. Dr Delvin says there's little point in doing this when the penis is limp because the length of a flaccid penis can vary a lot, for example depending on how cold the room is.

To get a precise measurement, do it when you have an erection. Take the measurement from the base of the penis on the side nearer to the tummy, up to the tip, where the hole is.

Average penis size

There are no average length figures for teenagers because people grow at different rates.

For adults, the average penis size is about 14-16cm (5.5-6.3 inches) when erect. The average girth for an erect penis is 12-13cm (4.7-5.1 inches).

A penis would only be considered unusually small if it was less than 3 inches (7.6cm) long when erect.

The measurements are based on a review of 50 studies on penis size conducted since 1942, which between them have measured 11,531 penises.

The review was carried out by Professor Kevan Wylie, a consultant in sexual medicine at the University of Sheffield.

There is large variation in the angle of an erect penis. Some erect penises point straight up, others straight down. Some have a slight bend to the left or right. There is no right shape. If you have a more significant bend in your penis that may cause you pain or difficulty having sex, see your GP. Sometimes, these can be symptoms of Peyronie's disease.

Each penis is unique and boys develop at different ages and rates. During puberty, usually between the ages of 11 and 18, the penis and testicles develop more rapidly, although the penis doesn't stop growing until the age of 21.

Regardless of actual size, many men are still unhappy with the size of their manhood.

Professor Wylie's report examined the results of an internet-based survey of more than 50,000 men and women, which revealed that 45% of men would like a larger penis. His report concluded that excessive concerns about penis size were higher among men with average-sized penises than men with small ones.

What women think

Professor Wylie's report also found differences between what women and men think. A much higher percentage of women (85%) were satisfied with their partner's penis size than the percentage of men (55%) who were satisfied with their own penis size.

According to Professor Wylie, the issue of attractiveness to women is complex. However, most studies suggest that penis size is much lower down the list of priorities for women than such issues as a man's personality and grooming.

Professor Wylie says: "It may come as a surprise to some young men, but most women have very little interest in the size of their penis and that's been shown in numerous studies over time."

He says research shows that when it comes to sex, women are much more interested in whether you are romantic, tender and sensitive to their needs and desires than your penis size.

Counselling has proven to be beneficial for men with penis anxiety. Therapy helps patients identify and correct any distorted views about their penis, build self-confidence and overcome fears about sexual relationships.

Professor Wylie says: "Therapy allows these men to overcome their anxiety about meeting a potential partner, where before they wouldn't even dare engage because of their fear."

Doctors have removed a 10cm long steel fork from inside a man’s penis, after a sexual adventure went horribly wrong.

The 70-year-old visited Canberra Hospital’s emergency department complaining of bleeding genitalia.

He then promptly admitted that he had inserted a piece of cutlery into his urethra in an attempt to pleasure himself.

Unfortunately the attempt backfired and it became stuck, leaving him in considerable pain. Despite this, it took him 12 hours to pluck up the courage to seek medical help.

The fork was so firmly lodged inside the man's body that doctors could not initially see the cause of the discomfort, according to the report in The International Journal of Surgery.

The procedure was successful and the elderly man was sent home with no long-term damage.

According to the article, entitled ‘An Unusual Urethral Foreign Body’, it is very rare to find alien objects lodged in the lower urinary tract.

But, it said, many unexpected objects have been retrieved from other parts of the body.

These include toothbrushes, pencils, allen keys, plastic cups, light bulbs, thermometers, plants and vegetables, leeches, snakes, wax and glue.

Doctors Krishanth Naidu, Maurice Mulcahy and Amanda Chung said they chose to publish the unusual case 'to create discussion among the medical fraternity given the great management challenge faced by the oddity and infrequency with which a fork is encountered in the penile urethra'.

The added that the motives for inserting objects into such a sensitive region were difficult to comprehend.

According to the report, in a series of 20 adult cases over 9 years, foreign body insertions into the lower urinary tract have a low incidence, with men 1.7 times more likely to engage in the behaviour than women.

They said that practice tends to occur 'during states of pathological masturbation, substance abuse and intoxication'. 

In most cases embarrassed patients attempted to retrieve the item themselves, risking injury and foreign body migration.

The real danger was infection leading to death, because ashamed patients often delay medical treatment, they said.

Doctors generally try to avoid surgery in such situations, instead choosing an option that would minimise trauma and preserve erectile function.

According to the report, typical symptoms after having inserted a foreign object into the male urethra include lower abdominal pain, penile pain, swelling of glans or body of penis, inflammation of the urethra, dyspareunia (pain during sex), blood-stained urine, pyuria (pus in urine), increased urinary frequency, inability to urinate and fever.

A MAN with 10ST TESTICLES is unhappy after their removal - as the operation left him with a tiny penis.

Wesley Warren Jr had a 13-hour procedure to remove his swollen sac after it grew so huge he had to wear a hoodie top as trousers to support the load.

The 49-year-old couldn’t have sex and suffered from crippling pain from carrying around the testicles - which weighed more than a BABY HIPPO.

But now the American fears he will never be able to have a relationship with a woman after the surgery left his manhood measuring just an INCH long.

Speaking exclusively to the Sun, Wesley said: “I know the majority of people are probably expecting me to express extreme happiness and glee that my life has been transformed since the sac has been removed - but it’s not as simple as that.

“I do feel a great sense of comfort that the weight is no longer between my legs. It got to the point that it was a danger to my health.

“But when I look down at what’s here now it’s not the same as what it was. It’s totally different.

“My natural look prior to the growth is not what came out of surgery. What came out of surgery is a nub an inch long and it doesn’t get any larger.

“I’m grateful to have been pulled out of the fire, I was getting burned, but now I’m dealing with the first degree burns. I’m still disfigured.

“I can’t even think about getting into a relationship. It would take someone very patient or very insane to want to have me in their life.”

Wesley, from Las Vegas, started suffering from the embarrassing deformity after he squashed his privates while asleep in June 2008.

He went to the doctor and was prescribed antibiotics to reduce the swelling – but his testicles continued to grow.

Over time, they became so huge he was unable to wear trousers and was forced to stay indoors to avoid being stared at.

“I was a prisoner to the sac,” said Wesley. “It ruled my life. It shaped and formed how I lived day in and day out.

“I could only walk in baby steps – I had to stop every 30 seconds. It was just horrible. I couldn’t get in and out of a vehicle and even then I fell down on to the pavement and it took four grown men to try and lift me up.

“I had to give up going to the supermarket. My friends had to go for me. I was too embarrassed to go out.”

Wesley was diagnosed with scrotal lymphedema and docs said he would need a operation costing thousands to remove the sac.

But the former salesman could not afford the surgery because he claimed benefits.

Incredibly, Wesley considered SELLING his giant testicles on eBay to pay the hospital bill.

He said: “I met with a surgeon in California and asked what happened to the humongous growth. I said: ‘As it’s coming off my body I would like to retain the giant testicle sac.’ I wanted it bagged and taken home with me."

Dr Joel Gelman agreed to carry out the operation for free, which took a painstaking 13 hours to carry out.

The shocking surgery was filmed for a Channel 4 documentary to be shown on Monday (June 24).

Wesley spent three weeks in hospital before being allowed home - where he treated himself to a trip to the supermarket wearing a pair of trousers.

He said: “Before the surgery people would come and say to me ‘I don’t know how you deal with this. I would kill myself’.

“But I had no desire to die. I knew that sooner or later I’d have the surgery and I’d be better again. I kept having a positive mentality and that’s what got me through it.”

But Wesley’s ordeal is far from over as he will be forced to have another operation on his privates later this year.

He doesn’t rule out finding true love one day but insists his focus is on getting his life back to normal.

“I do want to be loved one day,” Wesley said. “But I need to go through the recovery process which will take some time.

“I’ve come a long way but it’s not the end of the road yet.”
