The History of Invacare

The Invacare Corporation has a rich and fascinating historydating back to 1885 and the Fay Manufacturing in Elyria, Ohio, which eventually evolved into the modern-day Invacare Corporation. Today, Invacare, with more than 5,500 worldwide associates, has become the world leader on the manufacture and distribution of medical products used in the home.

The modern-day story of Invacare - the last 30 years - will be rememberd as a American entrepreneurial story. It is about innovation, intelligent risk taking, and good people getting the job done. It is about growing both sales and earnings at a 20 % + compounded rate for the last 30 years. It is about acheiving $ 1 billion in annual sales for the first time.

Invacare has always been driven by excellence, to be the best - second best is something that never enters Invacare's mindset.

IT TOOK THOUSANDS OF YEARS for humankind to combine two of its more useful inventions- the wheel and the chair- into a single mobility device for the disabled community.
And, although the first wheelchair can be traced to the 6th century, the history of this medical device is still being written as social awareness, medical science, and technological advancements further the development of rehabilitation and medical equipment.
Hailed by some as the most important mobility device in rehabilitative medicine, the wheelchair today is used by close to 2 million Americans.Yet only in the last 30 years has the wheelchair industry- itself relatively young-
become truly responsive to the needs of wheelchair users and their need for autonomous, active living.
Today's wheelchairs are slek, sporty, and colorful. In addition, the wheelchair available today have been designed with multiple user needs in mind. The newer wheelchair models are a far cry from their unwieldy ancestors, which in many ways segregated their users from society rather than integrating them.
Today's multifuctional and attractive wheelchairs are causing people to view the wheelchair and other mobility
equipment as enabling rather than stigmatizing." As the cultural thinking shifts to, 'It is alright to use these mobility products, ' more people are going to use them, said Neal Curran, vice president of engineering and product development for Invacare Corporation, the world's largest producer of wheelchairs.
