Kenya: Man Who Burnt Wife's Wheelchair Gets One Year in Jail

A man who went to his former physically challenged wife as she slept at an IDP camp and burnt her wheelchair has been jailed for 1 year after pleading to a charge of malicious damage to property. Jackson Mungai Murenyi, 38, was sentenced by senior resident magistrate Leticia Wachira. He was unable to immediately raise a fine of Sh100,000 imposed on him.
The magistrate had ordered Sh80,000 be refunded to the complainant if the accused paid the fine. The accused admitted that on May 8 in Ruiru, willfully and unlawfully destroyed wheelchair valued at Sh80,000 the property of Ann Mueni Muturi. Giving the facts of the case, prosecutor chief inspector Josephine Wambua told court that the complainant was asleep when she heard a commotion outside her tent at Ruiru IDP camp.
The court heard that the complainant peeped through the tent and saw her former husband outside roaring menacingly with rage. Sensing peril, the complainant raised alarm. Members of the public responded swiftly to her distress call forcing the accused to escape.
The matter was reported at Ruiru Police station.
