Forget a better body, relieving stress and improving your overall health. There's a brand new reason to hit the gym.
It's a little controversial, but some women are swearing by it.
It's called the "coregasm".
Wendy Matthews never misses a chance to work out.
She's a personal trainer and hits the gym everyday for work and for play, but one day, something completely threw off her routine - in a good way.
"I was actually exercising and I was feeling some kind of pleasure and I just didn't know what it was," she recalls.
Wendy didn't know it at the time, but she was actually having what many have called a "coregasm."
"It's a certainly wonderful and for many, unexpected benefit of exercise," says Debby Herbenick, Ph.D.
She's the author of the book, "Sex Made Easy" and is also behind a recent study that asked hundreds of women about getting hot and heavy while working out.
For women, a corgeasm is some type of orgasm she has from physical exercise. A coregasm specifically would be exercises usually that are very demanding on the abdominal muscles, things like sit-ups, crunches, and the captain's chair.
In the study, some participants said they got aroused during yoga, even mopping floors and raking leaves, and it doesn't have to be a full-on orgasm.
Some women just report feeling mild sexual stimulation.
Herbenick estimates as many as 15% of all women get sexual pleasure from exercise.
"It's that last one. It's that last effort you put into, and it's so wonderful and it feels so good!" says Wendy.
It's enough to get other women like Cheryl Hemed intrigued.
"I better start working more on my abs!" she says.
She hasn't had a coregasm yet, but she says she's willing to put in more time to get the job done.
"It would even encourage me to come to the gym twice a day!" she laughs.
Wendy says women should embrace their coregasms, not hide from them.
She sees the whole experience as just another reason to hit the gym, get healthy, and feel sexy.
"If you come to the gym and you exercise and you have a coregasm, that's a plus!" she says.
Researchers say the same thing can happen to men.
The authors of the study are currently looking into that phenomena, as well as trying to figure out if people can be taught how to have a coregasm..
